Privacy policy
Last updated 11 October 2026WAKA WELL is a map and directory for Lekki and Yaba, Lagos. This page says what we collect and why, in plain words.
What stays on your phone
Your recent places, Home and Work and settings are stored on your phone only. Your position is used on your phone to show where you are and to plan a route. It is not sent to us for that.
Your profile and how the app is used
While you use the app freely, we keep a small profile against a random device ID (not your name or phone number): your display name if you gave one, the places you saved, whether your phone is an iPhone, an Android or a computer, when you first and last came, and how many visits. We also count simple actions, such as opening a place, choosing a category, planning a route, tapping Order on Bolt or inDrive, sharing and contributing. These counts carry a category, a place ID or a company name, never your position, never what you typed into a search, and never your Home or Work. We use them to see which parts of the app help people and which places to check first. Counts older than 120 days are deleted.
To stop this, switch off “Keep my profile and help improve the app” in Profile, then tap “Delete my data from the server” to remove what we already hold. Bigger actions, such as reviews, rewards and ordering a taxi, ask you to sign in with an email address (see below).
Signing in with your email
When you sign in, we keep your email address with your profile and send you a six-digit code to prove it is yours. The code is stored only as a scrambled hash and stops working after ten minutes. We use your email to sign you in and to credit your rewards, and we do not sell it or use it for advertising. Signing in is asked for only when you write a review, send something that earns points, or order a taxi. Deleting your data in Profile also removes your email and signed-in sessions.
What we receive
- Live traffic: while you drive with directions on, your phone sends how fast it is moving and roughly where (to about 100 m), every few seconds, with no name, no device ID and no account. The server only adds the speeds up for each 110 m square of road and each 5-minute slot, keeps those totals for three hours, and shows the average on the traffic map. Nothing it keeps says who drove, and it keeps no trail. Walking directions send nothing.
- When you confirm a place, review it, add a photo, report a problem, report fuel at a filling station or send a survey: what you wrote or chose, your display name if you gave one, a random device ID, and the date. A photo has its hidden location data removed before it is sent. For a confirmation we check on our server that you were within 250 m of the place, and we keep that distance, not your position. A fuel report (what a station has, and the price) is shown to other visitors for 24 hours with how long ago it was sent, and never with your name.
- Taxi fares and recorded routes: if you tell us what you paid for a taxi, we keep the company, the price, the length of the trip and the hour, with no position and no name, and show them to others as what riders paid. If you record a bus or danfo route, your phone keeps the line of positions (no times) only on your phone until you send it. Before it is sent the first and last 150 m are cut off so it never shows where you live or work, a person checks it, and if it is approved it is shown on the map as a line with the name you gave it.
- Weather: the home screen shows the weather for where you are. Your phone asks Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) for it with a position rounded to about a kilometre: the middle of the map, or your position if you have shared it. We do not keep it.
- A hashed network address: we turn your IP address into a scrambled value so we can stop abuse such as many submissions from one source. We cannot read the address back.
- Field agents: the position at the time of a survey is kept, because it sets the entrance or the corrected pin.
Business phone numbers and websites
Most places come from public listings. The phone number or website shown is the one the business published itself, and it is marked "from a public listing, not confirmed". We do not add numbers from anywhere else.
If a number is yours and you want it gone: open the place, tap "This is my number: remove it" (or "Report a problem" and choose "Remove my number or listing"). We remove it from the app once we have checked the request.
Who sees what
Reviews, photos and corrections are shown to everyone only after we have approved them, with the display name you chose. We do not sell personal data and we do not run advertising trackers. Map data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors and Overture Maps.
How long we keep it
Submissions are kept while they are useful to keep places accurate. You can ask for yours to be deleted using "Report a problem" in the app, naming the place and what you sent.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. Use "Send feedback" in Profile to reach us.
